Hurray!!! Someone finally said it - I am in full agreement with you about the way personal branding is being approached today. I find most posts superficial and like you suggested being promoted in a very cult-like manner with little to offer in terms of new insights.

Yet, I do believe in the value of authentic personal branding coming from a place of providing focus to people to be in touch with their highest potential, find their unique positioning, and communicate effectively. While even this is not new, my perspective is that what is new and needed is more self awareness. And I wrote about that in my Blog:
http://mindfulmarketers.blogspot.com/2009/10/what-is-missing-in-current-discussions.html

The other angle with which I approach personal branding is based on authenticity and this is a fairly new discussion in management. And that is more about living in alignment with our purpose:
http://mindfulmarketers.blogspot.com/2009/07/are-you-authentic-entrepreneur.html

So, while I don't like the way the current discussion is dominated by the narrow approach to personal branding, I do believe it has value when used as a way to get people to be the best they can be.

Thank you for providing another lens to this discussion :)

I believe there is so much hype around Social media, there are however some that really stand out. Like any market, their is quality and their are some that think quantity and any product will do. I think its a revolution that has just begun and there will be some very big sorting going on. Quality will remain.

Amen.

Personal branding is probably just a new concept to this certain young crop of professionals who happen to be looking for jobs and are accustomed to everyone looking when they yell, "Hey, look at me!"

In defense, when any generation discovers something for the first time they think they invented it.
